Hang On! (Cathi Gives Some Thoughts About Hangers)

Posted on: November 9th, 2015 by Cathi Lefton No Comments

I love making life simple.

That’s why I’m always on the lookout for closet accessories that work efficiently. I have two favorites. I adore “S” hangers. They are open ended and can only be used for pants but they save about 3 or 4 inches in height when hanging in a closet and they keep pants from sliding off the hanger or from getting creases.

They are an absolute staple in our home and in almost every closet that I design. I also like nonslip hangers. They are shaped like an upside down U and are made with a rubber coated metal. They’re fabulous for tank tops, thin strapped garments or anything with a wide neck. I carry both of these hangers because I can save my clients money on them and they are difficult to find. I also love the thin, felted hangers. They take up so little space in the closet and garments hang beautifully on them. They are available everywhere but I don’t carry them because they are so readily available.

The hangers that are intolerable to me are the big, plastic ones. They take up way too much space width wise and height wise, plus clothing slides off of these hangers. I’d rather see my clients using the wire hangers from the cleaners than the plastic ones.  But, please, return the hangers with the white cardboard (for pants) to the cleaners as soon as you get home! Try the “S” hangers instead! The flat clippie hangers that the department stores use are great for hanging shorts and skirts as they take up so little room height-wise.

It’s funny how a little thing like hangers can make such a big difference but, like doing a closet for the first time, once you use them you’ll never go back to the old way!

My Love of Designing Closets

Posted on: October 11th, 2015 by Cathi Lefton No Comments

I LOVE designing closets! My clients are always so happy as they put their possessions away and have an easily accessible place for everything. Whether it’s new construction or a remodel, walk-in or linear closet I love finding ways to make every inch work!

One thing that I really like doing, space permitting, is adding drawer space to a closet. While many folded items should be stored on open shelving (sweatshirts and sweaters, for example), there are some items that MUST be in drawers. Underwear, bathing suits, socks, pajamas—they don’t stay neatly on shelves. When I design either an island (if you’re lucky enough to have a really large walk-in closet) or drawers in the perimeter of the closet, each one is totally customized.

I usually recommend dividing drawers for underwear, socks and jewelry and making them fairly shallow so nothing gets lost. Deeper drawers without dividers work well for p.j.s, workout clothing, etc. I can build drawers in any height, depth and width. I can install dividers and locks, I can line drawers for jewelry, too! I stock lovely brushed chrome knobs and pulls but occasionally my clients choose to supply their own handles, which, of course, we are happy to install for them on our drawers. We an add any kind of countertop. The laminates today are so versatile that it’s often difficult to tell if they’re laminate, wood, granite or even marble. I can do it all!
